John W. Roper
Columbus GA Consumer Law Home

consumer lawyerohn W. Roper grew up in the predominately military south side of Columbus, GA during the watershed years of the 1960's. He lived in various parts of the South after his father died when he was ten and the family was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. His mother returned to the Ft. Benning area, with a BS in bacteriology but with little in the way of marketable skills and having been out of the work force for ten years. Over the next several years, Mr. Roper acquired firsthand experience learning the pain and frustration of being a consumer on the downside of power that determined where you lived, how you lived and how you were able to enjoy or suffer being a creature of circumstances.

Mr. Roper graduated from Columbus (junior) College and received a BBA in Marketing from Georgia Southern College two years later. After a few employment experiences in corporate Atlanta, Mr. Roper began teaching Marketing at Columbus Tech in his hometown as he studied various means of starting a family business and attended graduate school at the University of Georgia. In 1976, he started a collection agency from scratch at home that, by 1978, was able to send him to law school and eventually grew to a regional operation with several million dollars in annual sales

In 1985, Mr. Roper joined the law firm that had represented his company since 1978 and within two years left with one of the firm’s partners to commence a small practice. Growing through three partnerships Mr. Roper commenced solo practice in 2001 at his present location in north Columbus, Georgia.

Drawing from business experience on the other side of the consumer's interests, personal background and many years of representation of creditors of all kinds, Mr. Roper concluded in 2006 that the consumer is getting lost in the shuffle of economic growth as large industry jacks interest rates on credit cards, sells unfavorable mortgage relationships, builds shoddy products, manipulates credit scoring, engages in predatory lending practices, adheres to unfair and deceptive practices and promotes, not the idea of customer first, but the philosophy of how much will congress let us take. The effective result is that consumers pay thousands of dollars each every year because the forces against them have begun to spin out of control. It shouldn't be that way. It doesn't have to be that way.

Not many lawyers specialize in consumer law these days, but not many lawyers have been representing consumers in personal matters for than twenty years, either. While Mr. Roper is but one attorney, he may be able to help you level your playing field before or after abuse happens. .
